Turkish Sweet Cheese Pastry Recipe (Künefe)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). In a large bowl, shred the kataifi and mix with melted butter until well coated. In a baking dish, layer half of the shredded kataifi, pressing it down firmly. Spread the mozzarella cheese evenly over the kataifi, then top with the remaining kataifi, pressing again. Bake in the oven for about 30-35 minutes until golden brown and crispy. While the künefe is baking, prepare the syrup by boiling sugar and water together for about 10 minutes, then add lemon juice and let it cool. Once the künefe is baked, pour the syrup over it and let it soak for a few minutes. Serve hot, garnished with crushed pistachios.
